Open mic: Am I the asshole? Who should we believe about AI?

Weigh in and tell me if you think we should be talking about AI more here because I'm pretty opinionated about whose opinions I trust

Am I the asshole? Who should we believe about AI?

Welcome back to another open mic where I ask you to weigh in on topics I see frequently coming up in conversations. Today's question:

Am I the asshole? Who should we believe about AI?

I saw someone on social media saying they felt like we couldn't have nuanced conversations about AI because either people are true believers letting their blood be sucked on by the machines or people are major haters with hard lines about usage and ethics. Where's the space for the middle of the road POV?

Valid question. As someone who mildly uses AI chatbots, it made me wonder why I have such a strong reaction when I see people talking about AI at all and I realized the answer is this:

I don't trust people who've never built technology themselves or worked in the power construct of Silicon Valley or maybe, by extension, the military, to understand a damn thing about artificial intelligence.

That's my perspective. I don't want to talk with entrepreneurs who don't have a tech background about this. But, I'm putting it out to you—people I trust—so you can tell me I might be wrong about it.

Who do you trust when it comes with ethical reporting and future casting perspectives on AI? Should we be talking about it more here? How do we capture that nuance without drinking anyone's Koolaid?
