Legends of the Fall: Mixer Guide

A fresh Legends mixer is upon us! Here's everything you need to know to have a great time and get some good connections outta this.

🛶 How the mixer flows

Our mixers are always too short! We'll have one hour together and here's how we'll use it:

• Musical opener: Benjamín Mora will play as Legends join 5 mins
  • This is a great time to review your matches, take note of which breakout rooms you're in and check out those Legends' profiles
• Welcome: I'll greet you and set the stage for our mixer 5 mins
• First round: You'll meet your first matches 15 mins
• Musical break: We'll break in between rounds and listen to Benjamín Mora play 5 mins
• Second round: You'll meet your second matches 15 mins
• Musical break: We'll break in between rounds and listen to Benjamín Mora play 5 mins
• Serendipity round: One last rapid round where you'll get paired randomly with one person 5 mins
• Musical closer: Benjamín Mora will play us out! 5 mins
  • Use this time to draft follow-ups, take note of who you want to keep in touch with

Use our Legends directory to learn more about who's in your room. Filter by Fall Mixer to see who's at the mixer. You can "star" profiles and they'll save in your browser unless you clear your cookies.

💬 What to Talk About DURING the Mixer

Remember that the time goes fast! Keep your first answers short. HIGHLY RECOMMEND SKIPPING INTROS. Find people in the directory instead.

Whoever goes first should keep the conversation flowing, pass the mic to the next person and help prompt questions. The below questions are optional. Use them as a starting point.

Round 1

Who goes first: person with the SHORTEST LAST NAME

• What was your first paying client like, and where did you meet them?
• What's a small win from the past month that you're proud of?
• What's one thing you're currently looking for help with?

Round 2

Who goes first: person wearing the MOST COLORS

• What's a recent moment when someone in your network came through for you?
• What's a bad take about your industry or job you love to bust?
• How do you like to collaborate with other business owners?

Serendipity round

Who goes first: person JOINED THE BREAKOUT ROOM LAST

• What’s one project you are excited about right now?

• Keep the chat flowing! Feel free to say hi! Drop links! Tell jokes! Cheer on the music!
• Inside your rooms, skip intros. Time goes FAST.
• No one in your room? Find another! Use the directory to see who might be cool! Or come back to the main room and I'll help you find a new spot.
• Conversation over? Suggest a room change and head into another room!
• Real connections are better than connecting with everyone. Keep a look out for people with shared audience, location, industry or other overlap with your work.

✏️ How to Follow Up AFTER the Mixer

Choose 2-5 Legends from the mixer (or the directory) to follow up with.

Here's 8 great ways to make those connections matter:

1. Ask them for a virtual (or in person if you're nearby) coffee chat
2. Follow them on social, on their newsletter or on their podcast and start paying attention to their work
3. Invite them onto your podcast or livestream
4. Invite them to do a newsletter swap
5. Interview them for your newsletter/blog
6. Invite them to an event you're hosting
7. Invite them to another community you love
8. Offer to send an intro you think they'd want (be sure to confirm with them before making said intro!)

Guidelines for Follow Ups

The Legends who attend mixers and participate in collaborations WANT to connect! That's been the coolest thing about creating this space is seeing how much you want to work together. THAT SAID...

• Be mindful about who you follow up with and why. It's not appropriate to ping every single person in the mixer directory for a coffee chat. Have a reason to connect. That reason does not need to be transactional but it should be common ground, shared audience, something meaningful.
• Be clear about your intent when following up.
  • "I'd like to invite you on my podcast"
  • "I wanna hear more about coaching that little league team"
  • "It looks like we live in the same town and I'm wondering if you'd want to have coffee in person."
    
    Again, your intention does not need to be even business related, but it's super helpful if you're clear about what you wanna get out of the connection. You can absolutely ask for a "get to know you" conversation, just be clear that's what you'd like to do.
• Please don't pitch other Legends unless you're asked to. I LOVE LOVE LOVE hearing that y'all are hiring each other but unless a Legend reaches out with clear intent to hire you, please avoid pitching them like they're a lead. What's more common in this network is referrals and amplification (online boosts, shares, content collaborations.)
• Please no "pick your brain" chats. Y'all know how I feel about that. Keep it mutually beneficial!
