The question:
Are virtual summits a scam or not?
The context:
I didn't start in the online business space. I moved into it from tech. In tech, there's lots of "summits" but they tend to be corporate backed and high profile still where speaking at them could book you a nice contract. When I shifted into online business, I learned about a new type of summit where people come together to give talks but the real goal is email list building (mainly for the summit organizer but also for the speakers.) Having now attended and spoken at a few of these, I'm come to see them as scammy practice. I'm all for list building but it's kind of a bait and switch to have to give your email to see a talk. It's not the end of the world. No one's getting bankrupted. But attendees are getting tons of spam in their email inbox, most of which probably isn't that relevant for them. They just wanted to see a talk! From the speaker side, it's a bunch of unqualified leads who didn't necessarily want your emails. I also hate having to promote summits because c'mon, another summit where we talk about the same shit? Who cares?! So, what do you think? Are virtual summits a scam? Or not?
