You can't buy community

What homeless encampments taught me about the difference between access and acceptance

You can't buy community

People tell me I'm "good at community." If that's true, it's because of how much time I've spent in homeless encampments. Stay with me.

Entrepreneurs think they can just buy their way into any community. Sure, you can buy access. But having access doesn't mean you're part of the community. It's like when an uncool rich kid throws a birthday party. People will come because it's fun to go to rich people parties, but they're not gonna make friends with the rich kid. That rich kid has access. They don't have community.

I see this all the time in professional spaces. People pay to join a membership believing this is their ticket to fast network growth. They're elated to introduce themselves. They share all their links with a "Let's connect!" Then, they quickly disappear only to be seen again when they need something: "Hey fam, I'm doing this thing. Would love your engagement..."

Sorry, who's fam? Are we your fam? We barely know you!

In homeless encampments, takers lose quickly.
