You know those no meeting days? The days you look forward to on your calendar when you have nothing planned? Oh, the projects you will tackle! Oh, the tasks you will knock out!
And then...that day arrives, but you don't know where to start. It's almost TOO MUCH freedom.
I am staring at a blank calendar for October.
By my design. I'm staying in a tiny house on an island this month. The wifi is not strong and the office options are limited. I cleared my schedule in anticipation. I thought the peace and quiet would give me lots of space to dig into some meaty projects.
MY MISTAKE.
It's hard to know where to start and how much to do each day. I guess I need a little structure.
Luckily, my favorite daily planner, Sunsama, just released a new feature that is helping me get a little routine going: automatic timeboxing.
I've never been a big timeboxer because I go back and forth between tasks all day but I've always appreciated how Sunsama estimates my workload for me and warns me when it's too much. I budget 6 hours of work a day and they show me what's realistic to accomplish in 6 hours.
Their new task projection feature visualizes your daily plan on your calendar, without you having to add any timeblocks. Rearrange your tasks and your calendar will shift too.
You don't have to push these blocks through to your actual calendar—it's just a visualization of how you'll spend your day—but if you do want it on your calendar, just hover over the block they created and click "pin to calendar."
The less meetings I have (I have maybe 5 scheduled things from now until the end of the year), the more important this tool becomes. Sunsama gives me a rhythm, a structure, a reality check that I very much need as someone without a boss.
This month I have in Roatán, Honduras could be one endless to do list, but Sunsama's gonna help me make sure I get what I need to done, and then shut down the laptop and enjoy this place a little.
