Don't launch with monthly subscriptions

Brought to you by the fine folks at Outpost for Ghost publishers. Outpost helps indie publishers like us convert more free readers into paid subscribers 🪐

Launching with monthly subscriptions is one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a media entrepreneur.

Why? Because it's a recipe for FAST BURNOUT.

Let's say you're going to charge $7 a month for your media subscription.

(I believe you should charge at least $9 but I'm gonna say $7 because I know you were thinking $5 so we'll meet in the middle 😛)

Welcome back to No Monopoly Media Week. Every day this week, I'm sending you a story about why we should read, back or become indie media.

I'm doing this to raise awareness for the mission behind my work this year and to raise audience funding to keep going. Join my Summer Reader Raise! Shout out to Devin, Chris, and Dr. Metcalf for your contributions yesterday and to Jamie for becoming a Lifetime Legend! Only $2050 more to go which is just 7 more people becoming LIFETIME LEGENDS. Will it be you!? It could be you!

Ok, so you're offering $7/month for your labor of love. You get your first subscriber. Then, your second. Best case when you launch you get maybe 100 paid subscribers unless you're Alex Hormozi huge.

100 paid subscribers at $7/month is $700 a month.

Is that sufficient to compensate the time it takes you to research, write, interview, record, edit, design, publish, market—whatever you're producing? Probably not.

And most of us don't get 100 paid subscribers right off the bat so if it's more like 20 subscribers then you're making $140 bucks a month. And you'll watch as people join every week and you make...$7 extra dollars each time.

BLEAK SHIT.
